Trevor, If that "old bath towel" is not 100% Cotton (yes, there are bath towels that have some synthetic fiber content) then that would probably be the source of your scratches. Any synthetic fiber content, or, using a 100% cotton towel that is too thin (not "fluffy" enough) will almost always result in scratching. Go to Sears, Penney's, or even Price Club and buy several nice and fluffy 100% cotton hand towels (smaller than bath size, larger than a wash cloth). I pay $2.99 each for really nice ones at Price Club. (Avoid the bag-o-towels bargain at Price Club...they are not thick enough.) To get rid of the scratches, I recommend Meguiar's Medallion PAINT CLEANER. I just started using this stuff and it is absolutely amazing! It has absolutely NO abrasives. On light to moderate scratches it does a better job than Meguiar's #9 Swirl Remover. Plus...it's not abrasive like Meguiar's #2 Fine Cut Cleaner (which leaves behind ultra-fine scratches of its own). I take extremely good care of my Miata's paint. In fact, I'm pretty damn anal about it. Still, over the last year or two (since I last used Meguiar's #2 Fine Cut Cleaner) I had started noticing light scratches here and there. Scratches that #9 Swirl Remover would NOT take out. I was hesitant to go at them with #2 because of the ultra-fine scratches it leaves behind (which #9 removes but you really have to work at it). So...the scratches were there. Probably only I could see them. At a recent San Diego Miata Club meeting we had a rep from Meguiar's come talk to us about their products. He recommended Medallion Paint Cleaner as the product to use. He was absolutely right! 99.9% of the scratches were removed with a couple apps of Medallion Paint Cleaner. I used an random orbital buffer but elbow grease will work just as well...it's just more tiring and time consuming.
