  This sounds exactly like a problem I had when my car was only a few
weeks old.  Since it was still under warranty, I took it to the dealer
and they fixed it in no time, while I waited.  The service guy I talked
to wasn't very specific (job security!), but apparently some plastic
fitting had broken off in the window mechanism.

  You didn't mention how old you Miata is; if it's still under warranty,
take it to the dealer and have them fix it.  If they balk, you can say
you've heard this is a common problem-- which it seems to be.  If you
have to do it yourself, the problem should be pretty obvious once you get
the door panel off.  But you'll probably still have to make a trip to the
parts department.  Good luck!
